Hanwei - Cawood Viking Sword, 11th century
Hanwei - Cawood Viking Sword, 11th century
Named after its discovery location near Cawood Castle in England, the famous Cawood Sword is considered one of the finest and best-preserved examples of an 11th-century Viking sword. Preserved in the mud of the river Ouse bed for nearly a millennium, the sword has now found a permanent home at the Yorkshire Museum, where it is one of the main attractions. Which is almost certainly that a sister sword was unearthed in Norway in 1888, giving a valuable clue as to the origin of the Cawood Sword.
Hanwei’s version of the sword perfectly reproduces the lobed knob and downward curved quillons of the handle perfectly, while the wide blade is reproduced in 5160 high carbon steel. Weight and balance provide a very useful sword. No details of the original case are known, but the style of Hanwei’s leather-covered version is typical of the time.
