    Description

Roman sword Pompeii type Gladius with sheath, S. I
Roman sword Pompeii type Gladius with sheath, S. I
The gladius, the main weapon of the Roman legionnaires was used in many variations over the centuries. But finally, this highly feared short sword was gradually replaced by the longest spatha during the Middle/Late Roman Empire. The type of Gladius Pompeii (or gladius pompeianus), which replaced the Type of Mainz since the middle of the 1st century AD.C, constituted the final evolutionary stage of the Roman short sword. This late variant is named after the famous Italian archaeological site where the four canonical examples (dated before 79 a.m..C, the year of the devastating volcanic eruption of Vesuvius that buried the city under several meters of ash) were found.
The Roman sword we offer here is a reconstruction of a classic style of the late 1st century Gladius type Pompeii. The blade with straight and parallel cutting edges and a short triangular tip is forged in EN45 spring steel (not tempered, non-tempered). The edges are not sharp and the entire blade nipple is bolted to the knob (upper brass nut). The handle, protection and knob are made of wood.
This one-handed Roman gladius comes complete with a wooden sheath and ornate leather with brass accessories. Brass mounts are based on archaeological finds that are now preserved at the Valkhof Museum (Dutch: Museum Het Valkhof) in Nijmegen (Netherlands). The two iconographic plates placed on the observation side of the throat are adorned with partially minted, trimmed/perforated and engraved motifs. The hood, composed of a V-shaped frame with button finish, a horizontal band and an ornamental plate to match the reliquary plates, is topped with a palm tree. Cast brass suspension rings allow the wearer to bring his gladius to the true Roman style.
Note that this sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collection piece or decoration/exhibition and is not suitable for combat recreation. In addition to its quality as a collection object, it also fits perfectly as an accessory, p. E.g. to complete your costume.
