S.P.Q.R. - Birka long Viking saxophone. carbon steelS.P.Q.R. - Birka long Viking saxophone. carbon steel
This Viking Age knife with a sharp carbon steel blade is based on finds from Björkö/Birka (tomb 944), Sweden. The wooden and bone handle has an oval cross section and is therefore fastened firmly to the hand. The lid of the brass handle is equipped with a practical lace hole (a leather strap is included). The bone handle is decorated with elegant and elaborate details. Since the knife is made entirely by hand, these decorations may vary slightly from example to example. Keep in mind also that bones are a natural product and that color and/or grain deviations are quite common. Therefore, neither handle of this Saxo Birka is like the other and the images above are just an example.
The beautiful pod is made of vegetable tanned leather, hand dyed and decorated with elegant brass accessories. Thanks to three leather clips attached to brass rings, the knife can be carried horizontally on the belt in the typical Viking style. Birka’s original findings also served as a model for the stylized details of the sheath.
It should be noted that the blade is sharp and fully functional. Therefore, this Saxo is not suitable for exhibition combat and is only designed as a collector’s item or decorative object.
