    Description

Viking Sword (Eigg Island) with leather grip
Viking Sword (Eigg Island) with leather grip
This beautiful Viking sword is based on a silver-encrusted bronze grip excavated in 1830 on the isle of Eigg, Inner Hebrides, Scotland. Although some parts of the leaf were also found, they no longer survive. The original and beautifully detailed burial find is on display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Dated in the ninth or early 10th century, this finely crafted piece of Viking history is classified as Type D according to Petersen’s viking sword typology.
As the leaf of the original archaeological piece is missing, a classic Nordic shape was chosen for this reconstruction, and this one-handed sword features some of the typical characteristics of a traditional Middle-Age sword.
The straight double-edged EN45 spring steel blade has fuller, un sharpened wide edges. The handle, composed of a short oval guard (approx. 10 cm long and 2 cm thick), a handle strongly superimposed with brown leather and a knob of generous dimensions, is cast in bronze. The guard and knob are richly decorated and closely recreate the highly detailed engraved motifs and patterns of the original artifact. Like many historical examples of the time, the sword knob is a two-part construction. The full blade nipple is screwed into the lower flat section, and the knob cover is fixed to the base with two rivets. The beautiful details of the cap are accentuated by braided copper wire inlays.
This early medieval hand sword comes complete with a wooden and brown leather sheath with aged and finely detailed neck, chape and bronze loop (maximum belt width 6 cm).
Note that this sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collection piece or decoration/exhibition and is not suitable for combat recreation. In addition to its quality as a collection object, it also fits perfectly as an accessory, p. E.g. to complete your costume.
